Western Cape Coastal Rowing: Growing the Sport and Gaining International Exposure

Western Cape’s Coastal Rowing Club, based in Simonstown, is celebrating its 10th anniversary while continuing to grow the sport and provide opportunities for local rowers. Led by passionate rowers the club focuses on coastal rowing, offering a different experience from traditional flatwater rowing. The boats are designed to handle ocean waves and swells, making the sport both challenging and exciting. The club has partnered with the Lawhill Maritime Centre to introduce students to rowing.

Cape Coastal Rowing has succeeded in giving its members international exposure and have competed at prestigious events, including training in Vermont, USA, and participating in the World Masters Championships in Johannesburg. These experiences have been crucial in developing their skills and passion for rowing.

Coastal rowing presents unique challenges, including backward rowing and navigating ocean conditions, which the rowers have embraced. The sport has helped these young athletes develop teamwork, discipline, and a love for the water. The club’s focus on inclusivity has made coastal rowing an accessible and welcoming sport for newcomers.

Looking ahead, the club, under the guidance of coach Jamie Ingram, is preparing for the South African Coastal Rowing Championships next year. They have ambitions to expand competitions and create more opportunities for rowers to compete locally and internationally. The club is also planning interclub challenges to foster competition and growth in the sport.

Western Cape’s Coastal Rowing Club continues to promote the sport and provide pathways for young athletes to gain national and international recognition.
