In a spectacular display of skill and teamwork, the University of Cape Town (UCT) men’s rowing team recently emerged victorious at the National University Rowing Championships held in Port Alfred this past September. This marks a significant achievement for the team, as they continue to build on their winning legacy, having secured back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024.
The UCT team, composed of seasoned rowers and fresh talent, went head-to-head with some of the top university teams in the country, including strong performances from Western Cape-based competitors like Stellenbosch University (Maties) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC). In a tough and competitive field, the UCT crew outclassed their rivals, showcasing precision, strategic mastery, and remarkable endurance on the water.
Under the leadership of UCT captain Oliver Kane Smith, the team put in a rigorous training program that saw them train up to seven times a week, balancing academic commitments while preparing to defend their title. The UCT rowing program consists of various crews, from the top-tier “First Eight” to novice squads.
The success of UCT’s rowing teams, along with the rising prowess of universities like UWC, signals a bright future for Western Cape university rowing. These universities fall under the banner of Western Cape Rowing, which is a proud member of the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation. Their recent victories further solidify the Western Cape’s position as a dominant force in South African rowing.
Congratulations to Oliver Kane Smith and the UCT men’s rowing team on their incredible achievement!
