Lifesaving Western Cape Launches Video Series to Strengthen Pool Rescue Skills

A New six-part video series equips athletes and coaches with skills and confidence to excel in Pool Rescue competitions and real-life rescues.

Lifesaving Western Cape has launched a new Pool Rescue video training resource through the Rescue Sport Series, reinforcing its long-term commitment to athlete development, education, and the growth of lifesaving through sport.

The Beginner’s Guide to Pool Rescue Video Training Series is a six-part educational resource designed to support beginner and developing athletes by simplifying key Pool Rescue skills, improving technical understanding, and building confidence under pressure. The series is now live on the Rescue Sport Series website.

The Rescue Sport Series is a Western Cape–driven competition and development platform, created to grow participation in lifesaving sport, raise performance standards, and strengthen the pathway from grassroots involvement to high-performance rescue sport. Operating under Lifesaving Western Cape — a provincial body of Lifesaving South Africa — the series uses competition and education as tools to support safer, more capable lifesavers.

“This series matters because Rescue Sport is at the heart of developing athletes, coaches, and the next generation of lifesavers,” says Christina Mallion. “Creating it was a no-brainer — it aligns perfectly with our mission to grow the sport, elevate standards, and make lifesaving accessible to more people. This is about shaping the future, not just capturing it.”

The video series was developed collaboratively by a group of experienced coaches and athletes from within the Western Cape and national lifesaving structures. Together, Michelle Lamprecht, Kendra Du Toit, Nikki Mocke, Lauren Allott, and Christina Mallion combined technical expertise, coaching insight, and competitive experience to produce a resource that is practical, accessible, and immediately usable.

Pool Rescue can often feel intimidating for newcomers, with complex rules and technical requirements creating a barrier to entry. The series addresses this directly by breaking skills down into clear, achievable components.

“Pool lifesaving can sometimes be overwhelming for newbies with lots of technical skills involved,” says Michelle Lamprecht. “This training series breaks down each component and makes those skills look easy and achievable. Once you have the basics in place, it’s simply about consistent practice to refine them.”

That clarity plays a critical role in building confidence — a non-negotiable trait for any lifesaver.
