The Karate Association Western Cape will be playing host to karateka from all over the country for the national championships this weekend.
The tournament will be taking place at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch with registration and weigh-ins and registration of officials on Friday 6 March, with the kata competition on Saturday 7 March and the kumite competition on Sunday 8 March.
The opening ceremony starts at 08:00 on Saturday, with the competition proper kicking off at 09:00. Carol Daniels, Technical Convenor of Karate Association Western Cape, said they are excited to be hosting the top karate athletes from around the country.
She said she still needed to confirm the total amount of entries with Karate South Africa but was expecting 400 competitors from all over the country to converge on Stellenbosch. Western Cape will have the most entrants, with KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng also expected to be well represented.
Daniels expected a high standard of competition, with not only national titles at stake but also national ranking points. Team Western Cape have a number of athletes defending their titles and Daniels expects a lot of support for our local karateka.
Male and female athletes will be competing in the different weight categories in the under 21, senior, masters and veterans’ divisions.
Daniels invited members of the public to attend the tournament. Tickets will be available at the door. If you want to find out more, feel free to contact Carol at 082-0779967.
