West Coast Sports Awards first out of the blocks preparing for Provincial

This past weekend, the West Coast Sport Council hosted its annual awards at the Malmesbury Town Hall with significant fanfare, marking the start of the district-level ceremonies across the province. These awards are hosted by the District Sport Councils in each of the six municipal districts as a celebration of athletes, administrators, and volunteers from various federations. The event serves as a critical milestone in the sporting calendar, as the winners from each category in Malmesbury and the other five districts will now move forward to represent their regions at the provincial awards on February 28, 2026.

The ceremony saw a high-profile gathering that included the mayors from various towns across the West Coast, reflecting the local government’s support for athletic development. Key leadership figures in attendance included the Chairman of the West Coast Sport Council, Mr. Gerald Don, and the President of the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation, Mr. JP Naude. They were joined by members of the executive and the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Chief Director, Dr. Lyndon Bouah, to honor those who have excelled over the past year.

The awards recognized excellence across a wide range of categories, including the prestigious Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, as well as essential behind-the-scenes roles such as Administrator and Volunteer of the Year. Standout performances were highlighted from the Kickboxing and Karate federations, whose athletes dominated the competitive categories. Additionally, the Athletics federation was recognized for its strong leadership, with administrators from the code taking home top honors for their contribution to the sport’s success in the district.

As these winners transition to the provincial stage, the focus remains on the collective growth of sport in the Western Cape. The collaboration between the District Sport Councils and the Provincial Sport Confederation ensures that talent is recognized at the grassroots level before being elevated to the provincial spotlight. With the West Coast awards concluded, the remaining municipal districts will continue to roll out their ceremonies, building momentum toward the final provincial celebration at the end of the month.
