This past weekend, the Overberg Sports Awards celebrated the achievements of athletes, coaches, and administrators in a grand event held at Curro School in Hermanus. The evening was a memorable one, with Overberg Kickboxing dominating the awards, including Ruhan Romberg being crowned Sportsman of the Year.

The event saw a strong presence from Overberg Jukskei, whose full team proudly displayed their Overberg Jukskei colours, adding to the festive atmosphere of the night.
The ceremony was graced by key figures in Western Cape sport, including Mr. JP Naude, President of the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation, who delivered an uplifting message of support. Naude not only praised the dedication of Overberg athletes and administrators but also emphasised the pressing need for corporate sponsorship to assist self-funded sports. He urged sports leaders to adopt new methods to seek funding, highlighting the importance of embracing the provincial confederation model to develop a more robust media awareness programme. According to Naude, this approach would enhance the value proposition for the corporate sector, encouraging greater investment in local sports.

Also in attendance was Dr. Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, who delivered the keynote address, inspiring the community with his words. Mr. Archie Klaas, Deputy Chairman of the Overberg Municipality, was also present, lending his support to the event.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of the outgoing executive, with newly appointed Chairperson Ms. Jackie Nichols offering heartfelt thanks to her predecessor, Mr. Rudolph Johannes, for his decade of leadership and guidance. Nichols acknowledged the invaluable contribution Johannes made during his tenure and expressed her commitment to continuing the development of Overberg sport.

As always, the event showcased the incredible talent across various sports, with athletes, administrators, and federations being recognised for their efforts. The winners of these prestigious awards will now go on to represent Overberg at the Western Cape Provincial Sports Awards on 23 November 2024.

The Overberg Sports Awards once again demonstrated the strength and passion of the region’s sporting community, and with the right support from corporate sponsorship, the future looks bright for the athletes and administrators who continue to raise the bar year after year.
