Western Cape Tug of War rolls out Eden Tug of War Festival

This past weekend, the Eden Tug of War Federation hosted an electrifying event—the Eden Tug of War Festival, affectionately known as the Mossel Bay Tug Festival. With teams from across South Africa descending on the coastal town, the festival was a true celebration of strength, strategy, and community spirit. School and club teams from the Northern Cape, Free State, Cape Winelands, Cape Town, and the Eden District competed in what turned out to be an unforgettable showdown. Nearly forty teams, representing seventeen different clubs and schools, battled it out for top honors. The junior tournament, which featured fierce competition from Under-17 and Under-13 teams, showcased some of the brightest young talents in the sport.

The festival was not just about winning but about innovation too. Modeled on the prestigious European (GNSB) format, teams of 7 to 10 athletes took to the ropes in a display of skill, endurance, and teamwork. High school teams competed in weight divisions ranging from 400kg to 560kg, but it was the event’s unique mixed-gender rule that really set it apart. Teams were given a 10kg weight advantage for each female participant, up to a total weight cap of 600kg, opening the door for more inclusive competition and ensuring that everyone had the chance to make their mark.

Western Cape Tug of War President Jan “Barries” Barnard couldn’t have been prouder of the event’s success. He praised the seamless organization, the camaraderie among competitors, and the high level of sportsmanship displayed throughout the festival. “This event shows the power of Tug of War in bringing communities together,” Barnard said. “It was well-supported and publicized, with the backing of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and additional coverage from Tug of War South Africa.”

To top it all off, the event was live-streamed on SuperSport Schools, allowing fans from across the country to witness the thrilling action as it unfolded. As the dust settles in Mossel Bay, one thing is clear: the Eden Tug of War Festival has cemented itself as a highlight of the South African sporting calendar, and this year’s success sets a high bar for future events.
