Western Cape ringball players can look forward to some action

Western Cape Ringball players will be excited to hear the news that they will be in action soon after having been on the courts for the last time during March.

Wynand Zaayman – President Western Cape Ringball

Their president, Wynand Zaayman, said now that the gates are open again, they are planning a round robin tournament in three different towns.

Western Cape Ringball could not complete their competition this year due to the Coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown which led to a ban on all sporting activities. Thus, no champions for 2020 will be crowned.

But now that Ringball has received permission for a return to play, Western Cape Ringball want to host events on three Saturdays in Parow and the indoor facilities of Atlantis and Saldanha respectively.

Clubs that will be participating, are Atlantis, Bellville, Helderberg, Parow, Bella Vista (Ceres), and Saldanha.

Dates will be confirmed soon, said Wynand. Then we want to play so that we can get rid of the players’ frustrations.

I do not think we will be playing in October, possibly only in November. If we can get in 3 Saturdays for games from November until middle December it will be good. We might not get all the teams in all the towns but if at least three teams rock up at a venue it is okay.

I do not expect the standard to be the same than it was in March, as the players will be rusty. They only did home training, and no one was on the court and there were no contact sessions.

We do not play serious ringball this time of the year and this is the time when we introduce new players to the game. But it will be good to be doing some development during the off-season.

Hopefully, we will be building some momentum now that can continue into January and February and all the clubs will be at full tilt when we start with our leagues in March.

I want to encourage our players and administrators to not give up hope now. I am looking forward to welcoming a new club in our fold and want the sport to grow by at least 10% in the new year.
