This Saturday, 11 December 2021 the Western Cape saw the arrival of the Queen’s Baton at Cape Town International airport.
The Queen’s Baton carried by SASCOC’s 1st Vice President Ms Lwandile Simelane and escorted by SASCOC Team members and hosted by the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation visited the mother city on its final leg of the Queens Baton Relay. The Baton travels a route of seventy-two nations, with its final destination being Birmingham for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The day saw the Baton escorted by Thorburn Specialised services and the City of Cape Town law enforcement and traffic services through various local iconic locations in Langa included the home of the late Brenda Fassie and the Guga Stebe Arts and Culture centre before arriving at the Langa Sport Stadium.
The VIP entourage included the President of SASCOC Mr Barry Hendriks, COO Patience Shivamba, ACEO Ravi Govender and the Baton bearer SASCOC 1st Vice President Ms Lwandile Simelane.
As part of the relay the baton was presented to The Western Cape MEC for Sport Arts and Culture Mrs Anroux Marais who in turn handed the Baton to WCPSC President Mr JP Naude.
The relay included The Chairperson of the National Portfolio Committee the Honourable Ms Beauty Dlulane, Langa Sport Council President Mr Ernest Zonde, Para Olympic stars Ernst Van Dyk, Jonathan Ntutu, Anrune Weyers, SA Netball Team Captain Bongi Msome and Coach Dumisane Chauke.
After a short visit to the Langa Stadium which saw several children participating in various sports codes including a sports equipment handover the Baton moved on to the Cape Town Stadium for an iconic photoshoot with the British High Commission his excellency Anthony Phillipson.
