Our Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation members are doing us proud!
Hot on the heels of the national omnium track championship hosted by Western Cape Cycling, the African Continental Climbing Championship will be coming to Cape Town.
Western Cape Climbing will be hosting the championship, an Olympic qualifying tournament, from 18 to 22 March at CityROCK in Paarden Eiland. The first two days will be dedicated to qualifiers with the finals taking place on the Saturday and Sunday.
Chris Naude, president of Western Cape Climbing, says he was very proud of
his organisation and people for getting the nod to host this big event. He says the facilities at CityROCK is world-class and pretty impressive.
It is amazing that Cape Town was entrusted with hosting this competition and that people thought Western Cape Climbing would be the best body to organise it.
Chris said one of the messages they as an organisation wants to get out to the world is that Cape Town was ready and geared up and capable of running an international level competition. We have the facilities and the know-how to do it. He added that Cape Town was ready to arrange and host international competitions.
Besides South Africa, athletes from Mauritius and Uganda will be vying for top honours in order to qualify for the Olympic Games later this year in Tokyo.
Climbers will be competing in the open male and female categories, so all of them will be 16 years and older. Naude explained that climbing is a very popular sport, with about 5 000 climbers in the Western Cape. Most of them are doing climbing for relaxation – as a lifestyle thing – with about 150 doing it competitively.
