Women’s baseball in the Western Cape is experiencing a significant surge in growth and development, with the region playing a central role in the national pathway for female athletes. A major milestone in this journey was the recent participation of the South African Under-15 women’s team in the Africa Rising Stars series in Uganda. This historic tour, which featured several athletes from the Western Cape, has solidified a competitive “conveyor belt” that connects youth structures to the senior national squad.

As a member of the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation, Western Cape Baseball is actively working to formalize these advancements by establishing dedicated local league structures for women. Currently, many female athletes in the province gain experience and toughness by competing alongside boys, but the move toward a standalone women’s league is the next strategic step in the sport’s provincial evolution.

The Under-15 squad’s experience in Uganda, led by Western Cape-based head coach Zulfa Stellenboom, was about much more than the final results on the diamond. For many of the young athletes, aged 13 to 15, it was their first international experience and a profound cultural immersion. Despite competing against a physically formidable and experienced Ugandan outfit, the South African team focused on effort and on-field growth, maintaining high standards of sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
The tour also highlighted the deep institutional support for the women’s game. The management team included several development coaches and the head of South African women’s baseball, Haley Scott, further strengthening the bonds between the South African and Ugandan federations. This collaboration is viewed as a catalyst that will take African women’s baseball to the next level, with plans already being discussed for future exchange programs and competitions.
As these young athletes return to the Western Cape, they bring with them the lessons learned from the field of dreams in Uganda. With a clear pathway now established from the Under-15 and Under-18 ranks to the senior women’s team, the future of women’s baseball in the province is exceptionally bright. Western Cape Baseball now looks forward to the South African Nationals in Boksburg in April, where our athletes will once again have the opportunity to showcase their talent on the national stage.
