Western Cape Lifesavers Dominate at World Championships

Athletes from the Western Cape Lifesaving clubs have returned triumphant from the World Championships in Australia, showcasing their talent and bringing home multiple titles. Among the standout performers were Eve Abrams from Fish Hoek Lifesaving Club and Jake Hutton from Big Bay Lifesaving Club, both of whom secured world titles in the highly competitive Flags event.

Eve Abrams not only claimed gold in the individual Flags competition but also led her team to victory in the Beach Relay, marking a historic first for South African women at the World Championships. Her team’s victory in the Beach Relay stands as a milestone achievement, highlighting the strength of the Western Cape’s lifesaving athletes on the global stage.

Jake Hutton, competing in his first World Championships, also emerged victorious in the Flags event, overcoming pre-competition challenges to bring home a gold medal for Big Bay Lifesaving Club. In addition to their victories, other athletes from the Western Cape also shone at the championships. Holly Smith, from Fish Hoek, secured a bronze medal in a Still Water event alongside Eve, further adding to the province’s impressive medal tally. Clifton and Fish Hoek Lifesaving Clubs represented South Africa on the club level, with Clifton earning multiple accolades, adding to the Western Cape’s dominance at the event.
