This past weekend, the Western Cape Chess team delivered a stellar performance at the National Schools Chess Championship in Gqeberha, reaffirming their position as the dominant force in the sport. Continuing their remarkable streak of success, the Western Cape squad once again claimed the overall victory in the tournament, showcasing their deep pool of talent and strategic prowess.

The team’s dominance was especially evident as they secured gold medals in three major categories: the Under-18 Girls, Under-18 Boys, and Under-15 Girls. Their outstanding run was further highlighted by a silver finish in the Under-15 Boys section, solidifying their place at the top of South African schools chess.
A standout performance came from Amahle Zenzile, who delivered an incredible showing by achieving a perfect score, a testament to her dedication and mastery of the game. Zenzile’s achievement underscores the strength of Western Cape Chess and the province’s commitment to developing young chess talent.
Under the leadership of Western Cape Chess President Aldo Pekeur, the province has built an exceptional chess foundation, placing a strong emphasis on training trainers and nurturing talent, both during and after the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
