The spirit of Western Cape sport was on full display on 18 October 2025 as para-athletes from across the province gathered at Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium in Stellenbosch for the WCSAPD Para Athletics and Para Cycling Trials. The event delivered a powerful reminder of the talent, resilience and pride within the provincial para-sport community.
With athletes ranging from U14 competitors to seasoned seniors, the trials offered a packed half-day of action. Track stars, field athletes, cyclists and tricyclists all took their moment to shine, many chasing new personal bests while putting their names forward for potential selection. Masters athletes and Western Cape transplant athletes also took part, adding to the excitement of the day.
A Record-Breaking Moment
One of the standout highlights was a sensational performance from MATIES athlete Dowayne Vallentine. Competing in the seated Shot Put (F34) event, he launched an impressive 9.24 metres, setting a new South African record. The achievement was a fitting reward for his hard work and was celebrated by athletes, families and coaches.

Strong Support Behind the Scenes
The smooth running of the trials was boosted by service providers from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. Emergency Medical Services ensured athlete safety throughout the day, while catering services kept teams and supporters fuelled with quality meals. Their contribution played a major role in the success of the event.
A True Provincial Showcase
Attendance reflected the strength and diversity of para sport in the Western Cape, with 134 athletes competing across various clubs, categories and classifications. The programme included wheelchair racing, tricycle cycling, long jump, sprints, discus, shot put, javelin and middle-distance events. Photos from the day captured the determination and passion that defined the trials, from high-speed sprint finishes to powerful throws and cycling performances on the track.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 trials were more than a competition. They were a celebration of Western Cape athletes who continue to push boundaries and redefine what is possible. The event highlighted a pathway of opportunity, growth and excellence, and as national events draw closer, the province can look forward with pride as these athletes continue their journey toward greater achievements.
