Western Cape Climbing, in collaboration with CityROCK Paarden Eiland, proudly hosted its annual new
climber’s competition on Saturday, October 26, 2024. The event ran from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM at the
CityROCK facility, fostering an exciting environment for young climbers.
This competition is specifically designed for first-time junior athletes under the age of 14 who have never
participated in a climbing competition before. We were thrilled to welcome 55 enthusiastic competitors,
comprising 39 male athletes and 16 female athletes, all eager to showcase their skills.

Participants competed on both auto-belay routes —two routes per age group, specifically categorized as
Youth E/F, Youth D, and Youth C—as well as 12 bouldering routes. The excitement in the air was palpable, as each athlete tackled their challenges, often surpassing the expected climbing grades and levels.

The competition was fierce across all age groups, leading to several super final climbs that determined our ultimate winners. Athletes representing a diverse array of schools joined in on the fun, including teams from Rondebosch Boys Junior, Golden Grove, Llandudno, Jan van Riebeeck, Reddam, Generation Schools, Springfield, Oakhurst,
Kenridge, Bishops, and various other primary schools in the region.

The day was a resounding success, filled with camaraderie, skill development, and sheer joy for both athletes
and their parents. We eagerly anticipate these motivated young climbers continuing to train and looking
forward to seeing them rise through the ranks to join our elite junior athletes.
