Western Cape Netball is standing behind their two teams in the Telkom National League currently taking place at the Mangaung Indoor Sports Complex in Bloemfontein and believes they can go all the way.

Bennie Saayman, president of Western Cape Netball, in her farewell speech told the players from the Stings and the Tornadoes that they have the potential and the talent to give a good account of themselves at the tournament. The Tornadoes are competing in the tournament for the first time and are challenging for honours in the B-division.

The Telkom National League is the first big competition hosted by Netball South Africa since the national lockdown brought about by the Coronavirus brought a halt to all competitive sport.

Tannie Bennie made a speech at the farewell function for the teams on Monday evening. We had a nice farewell for the teams and we also launched the Telkom National League, she said.

The Stings finished second last year and I told them for us that was not good enough anymore. We are looking for a better position this year and that is a win – something they can achieve.

Unfortunately, they have lost against the Fireballs on Tuesday but they gave a really good account of themselves, losing by 2 goals only after being behind by 8. On Wednesday they beat the Flames convincingly.

The Tornadoes unfortunately came unstuck against the Aloes. But I told the teams they should wave the Western Cape’s flag high. We are behind them all the way.

We are in regular contact with the players and management and they are happy and keep themselves busy. Everybody is in the bio bubble and fortunately we have had no cases of Covid-19.

The Telkom National League ends on 28 October.
